For a Safe Start, Dress Smart! This Vint

For a Safe Start, Dress Smart!

This Vintage poster hit’s the nail on the head about the importance of dressing for work, especially when working around machinery.

No ties! Ties and other loose clothing can get caught in moving parts leading to death or sever injury.

Short sleeves. This is recommended because short sleeves are less likely to be caught in moving parts.

No rings! Rings can get caught or pinched resulting in the loss of a finger or worse.

Safe shoes. Wear the appropriate shoes for the environment you are working in. If working in an area that becomes slick often, slip resistant shoes can prevent falls. On the other hand, working in an environment that may result falling or rolling objects, steel toed shoes should be worn to protect your feet.

Have you ever heard of the Hierarchy of

Have you ever heard of the Hierarchy of Controls? The Hierarchy of Controls is a system used to minimize or eliminate exposure to hazards. This system is widely accepted, and promoted as a standard practice that should be used in the workplace. The system shows the controls from most effective to least effective in this order: Elimination/Substitution, Engineering Controls, Administrative Controls including Work Practices, and Personal Protective Equipment.

Elimination/Substitution is the act physically removing a hazard or replacing something, such as a piece of machinery that produces a hazard, with something that does not produce a hazard.

Engineering Controls are controls that are built or used to eliminate or reduce a hazard. Examples of these include: electrical safety devices and machine guarding.

Administrative Controls are changes in individual’s behavior or the way they work. This would include: training, procedure changes, or the installation of warning signs.

Personal Protective Equipment is equipment that protects an individual’s body from injury. This would include gloves, hard hats, safety glasses, and safety footwear.

Did you know that over 2,000 injuries ar

Did you know that over 2,000 injuries are sustained to worker eyes every day? The two most common reasons these injuries occurred was due to failing to wear eye protection or wearing the wrong form of eye protection.

How do you choose the proper eye protection for your job? First, you must be aware of the potential dangers you work with. These dangers may include: projectiles, chemicals, radiation, or blood borne pathogens. Once these dangers have been determined, proper eye protection can be determined. Different forms of eye protection include: safety glasses, goggle, face shields/helmets, and special protection to aid in additional protection. You should always make sure to use eyewear that is in good condition, and replace them if damaged. You can also help to protect your eyes by removing any potential dangers before beginning work. This can be done by adding machine guarding, screens, or other protection methods that will help to reducing the opportunity for damage to occur to you or your eyes.
